I currently run the B2B marketing company KNVRTED, boutique photography brand Carian, remote work consultancy Remoter and analyst newsletter Hype Decoder.

That's excluding some projects I'm exploring in the background. Why? Well, a) I'm a workaholic and b) I have many interests & skills. I mean, it would be a waste not to develop them into a business. For me, the creativity fueling my fire (well, raging hellscape really ;-)) doesn't stop with the shutter or enter button. There's as much art in execution as there is in creation.Check out the sites to learn more about them.

A new way of life that has taught me more than anything about resilience and chasing a life worth living.

SEP 2015 - DEC 2020

Founder | Consultant

Working with companies like AFAS, Exact, Funda, HP, Oracle, RTV-Noord, Samsung Business Center & VodafoneZiggo on a wide range of content projects.

OCT 2012 - FEB 2016

Head of content | EN/NL conversion copywriter/editor

A Dutch, multinational B2B SaaS provider. At Exact, I was part of the Content Marketing Team at Delft HQ for the Cloud unit. As the sole conversion copywriter/editor/head of content, I was responsible for content direction, hiring & editing work from freelancers and setting up scalable workflows that drove record ARR growth.

Highlights

The B2C-like tone of voice & streamlined marketing processes helped realize 30-50% YOY ARR growth between '13 & '16. It also helped us scale 5 products/verticals from 2 to 7 markets: NL, BE, DE, ES, FR, UK, US. On top of that we won the 2014 Markie Award for best international campaign from Eloqua/Oracle.

NOV 2011 - SEP 2012

EN/NL conversion copywriter/editor

A number of executive management changes between 2010 & 2012 at Exact led to numerous changes in both strategy and org charts. During this time I was part of the Exact Benelux Marketing Team at Delft HQ. I was responsible for copywriting, editing (work from freelancers) and translating/transcreating content in both NL & EN (US).

Highlights

Helping to set up a content production & publishing strategy for 5 separate email newsletters for 5 industries and executing it. Scoring a 100% turnout from a direct mail campaign I wrote. This was for an exclusive event for CEOs of large construction firms.

NOV 2010 - SEP 2011

EN/NL conversion copywriter/editor

A number of executive management changes between 2010 & 2012 at Exact led to numerous changes in both strategy and org charts. During this time I was part of the Corporate Online Marketing Team at Delft HQ. I was responsible for copywriting, editing (work from freelancers) and translating/transcreating content in both NL & EN (US).

Highlights

Creating 6 new country sites in 3 months within an org in turmoil. I led the blueprint NL/EN content production as lead copywriter/editor and had 3 freelancers supporting me. Thanks to my efforts it got done in time.

AUG 2010 - OCT 2010

NL conversion copywriter/editor

A number of executive management changes between 2010 & 2012 at Exact led to numerous changes in both strategy and org charts. During this time I was part of the NL Marketing Team at Delft HQ. I was responsible for copywriting, editing (work from freelancers) and content consultancy.

Highlights

Reviving and redesigning a company blog. I cut operating costs significantly, set up an automated RSS newsletter and managed to get more YoY traffic on it.

JAN 2000 - JUL 2010

Freelance journalist | copywriter | Webmanager

Various

During this time I combined working and studying. I started organising my own internships before I even set foot in university. This way, I could gain more relevant work experience where I wanted and prepare myself better for the future. Soon after the freelance gigs started coming. All relevant jobs are listed on my profile. Besides this, I also held a few jobs to help pay for my study (and the rest of the bills) - the type which aren’t so relevant to display. In between it all I had to finish my study too.

Highlights

I reverted to self-organizing internships to escape a crowded, mismanaged process that led me to miss opportunities. By taking initiative and going abroad, I set myself up for big opportunities down the line.

JAN 2007 - JUL 2010

Freelance tech journalist

The longtime publisher of IT magazines like WINMAG Pro & BaaZ. Between 2007 & 2010 I wrote articles for Clipboard publishing as a freelance journalist & tech reviewer, both blog & print magazine articles.

Highlights

Had lots of fun reviewing hardware like laptops & monitors and a wide range of software tools.

MAR 2009 - OCT 2009

Editor (voluntary)

Inyourspeakers Media

This was an independent, US-based music news & review site. At Inyourspeakers, I was an editor on a voluntary basis responsible for editing EN-US album reviews from reviewers and prep them for publishing.

Highlights

Helping to bring an exciting concept like Inyourspeakers to life during its startup phase.

SEP 2008 - SEP 2008

Conversion copywriter/editor

The largest cable company in The Netherlands. After my previous stint for VodafoneZiggo I was rehired as an external copywriter to rewrite/rebrand 2 business portals within a month. That included interviewing business partners and writing customer success stories and creating the copy for the portals.

Highlights

Rebranding and rewriting 2 business portals with all accompanying content solo, within a month, to coincide with a rebranding.

NOV 2007 - JUL 2008

Conversion copywriter | Copyeditor | Webmanager

The largest cable company in The Netherlands. I was called in as an external copywriter, copyeditor & webmaster/webmanager to replace 3 part-time creatives during the big merger that formed Ziggo. I maintained the content on the @Home portal AND part of the team that created the new Ziggo portal.

Highlights

Managing the workload of 2 copywriters and 1 webmanager + writing for the new portal project during a challenging time in the company's history. Lots of lay-offs meant it was a very dynamic working environment.

SEP 2006 - MAR 2007

Consultant | Journalist | Webmanager (voluntary)

A local, interethnic NGO, CBM is based in Mitrovica, Kosovo. With various projects, including a magazine, they support peace and community building in the region. During this self-organised internship I worked for them as a consultant, editor, journalist, (web)designer, webmaster and journalism teacher. All on a voluntary basis.

Highlights

Helped bring in around €200,000 in donor funds for their magazine, created a trilingual Joomla site, optimized their main site, did design work and gave Journalism workshops to 7 Albanian/American students.

JUL 2005 - DEC 2005

Newsletter copywriter

Worked for Download.nl, a brand part of ilse media. The latter was later bought by Sanoma. Back in the pre-Spotify days, Download.nl was an iTunes competitor where you could buy MP3s. I wrote monthly newsletters to market the music. Since the concept was a little ahead of its time, it's not around anymore.

Highlights

Improved click-through rates for music label content and even outperformed their content via a self-curated section based on a monthly theme.

JUL 2005 - JUL 2005

Copywriter/editor | Webmanager

Worked for search engine ilse.nl, a brand part of ilse media. The latter was later bought by Sanoma. I was rehired after a successful internship for the ilse.nl portal and a number of underlying channels. Someone went on holiday so I filled in for them.

Highlights

Improved click-through rates for various pages, services and partners.

SEP 2004 - FEB 2005

Copywriter/editor | Webmanager

Self-organised internship for search engine ilse.nl, a brand part of ilse media. The latter was later bought by Sanoma. I was webmaster and copywriter/editor for the ilse.nl portal and a number of underlying channels. I was part of the editorial team based in Amsterdam. The portal doesn't exist anymore.

Highlights

Improved click-through rates for various pages, services and partners.

MAR 2004 - MAY 2004

Reporter | Journalist

Worked as an intern for this well-known, storied regional newspaper. I worked in the editorial office in Almelo where we produced the daily newspaper for this region. As an intern I worked on several different beats/sections.

Highlights

Making the front page of the weekend section with a report/portrait about a forest ranger receiving death threats. Replacing an FTE who went on extended leave. This meant having to produce an entire section with another colleague for 2 months.

JAN 2000 - AUG 2000

Radio producer | Reporter (voluntary)

Self-organised volunteer internship for a local public news station. Before I started my journalism study I wanted to get some work experience. This way I could learn the trade on the job. It was also an excellent opportunity to support local journalism and civil society in general.

Highlights

Producing a Mo-Fri daily news program, creating news items and responsible for operating the board during broadcasts.

GEAR

Mastering the right gear can propel your career forward or launch new ones. That's why I've gathered some gear-related stories that changed my life. Note that none of this is sponsored. This is just gear from present and past I love(d) using.

2025

Got all EU licenses

Drone photography

Camera drone owners in the EU need the A1/A3 licenses by default. In 2025 I upgraded those skills by getting the A2 & and STS licenses. Not the easiest certificates to get, but well worth the effort.

Highlights

Creating new professional opportunities to fly heavier drones.

2024

Mechanical joy enters the chat

Film photography

In 2024 an opportunity came along to trade in old gear for a restored 2-hand Hasselblad 500C. It came with an 80mm f2.8 Planar C + C12 film magazine. Shooting film gives you more constraints and a longer workflow. However, using this medium format camera is a mechanical joy. Learnings I use in all my photography.

Highlights

How can you not love these sturdy, properly engineered behemoths?

2024

More manual goodness

Digital photography

In that same year, I found a used Voigtländer 50mm 1:1.2 for a good price. They say date your camera bodies, marry your lenses. Now I know what they mean. There's some purple fringing when shooting against artificial light sources you need to take into account in post, but it gives very film-like results and the bokeh is a delight. The lens itself is a solid piece of quality engineering.

Highlights

Learning to use manual focus, even in fast-paced environments. Shot some of my best work with it.

2023

My little DJI Pro

Drone photography

In 2023 I decided to invest even further in my photography/videography skills by getting a camera drone: a DJI Mini Pro 3, soon followed by a DJI Mini Pro 4. I turned the Pro 3 into an FPV-drone to experiment even more. And yes, I got the A1/A3 drone license too.

Highlights

Flying drones is fun, shooting photos/video with it even more. FPV is a completely different approach. Love it.

2023

Upgrading to a Sony A7R V

Digital photography

In 2023 I traded the Sony A7C as my main body for the more powerful Sony A7R V. It's a dependable beast. Yes, it's heavier, but that 60MP sensor gives you epic quality. Sure, not the best for video but I don't focus on that right now.

Highlights

Best camerabody I've owned to date and shot some of my finest work with it.

2021

Going full-frame with the Sony A7C

Digital photography

After my 2018 Sony RX100VI found a watery grave in 2021, I was ready for the next step in my photography journey: my first mirrorless full-frame camera. My goal was to shoot fully manual within a year. I chose the Sony A7C because it's a perfect travel companion: light, but powerful and versatile.

Highlights

First time since the 2000s since I was working with a full-frame camera again.

2010

iPhone 4 rings in my smartphone era

Gear

2010 was the year, although the iPod Touch + feature phone combo worked just fine before that. Even used the Touch at my new job at Exact as a temporary work device. Their IT took about a week to prep a slow corporate Windows laptop. Chaos all around.

Highlights

Arguably, still one of the best-looking iPhones. Although the 5, Mini 13 and 16 are up there too.

2004

Satisfied my Mac-curiosity

Laptops

In 2004 I switched over after working on MS-DOS/Windows/Linux machines for about a decade. What struck me about my iBook G4 was the better integration of hard- and software and focus on usability from Apple.

Highlights

While I've been using Windows and Linux machines since, I can't imagine going back fulltime. Especially with Apple Silicon inside post-2020 models.

1990s

Dark rooms, SLRs & Photoshop

Film photography

In the latter part of the 90s I learned to develop photos in our darkroom. We had photographers in the family and it was there. Same goes with the cameras, SLRs at that point. So why not? That also saw me help out with editing in Photoshop for their client work.

Highlights

Developing your own film is a vibe. An expensive one. But a satisfying one.

1993

The first PC arrives

Desktops

In late 1993 an obscure 2nd-hand MS-DOS clone was introduced in our tech-illiterate household. I'm an autodidact and learned to work with the beige box by myself. Back then that was mainly trying things (and ignoring manuals). We didn't even have access to the internet at home until years later.

Highlights

Me figuring this out by myself set the tone for multiple careers: as a journalist, marketer & photographer. Continuous self-development is an essential skill.

1993

Electrical typewriter goodness

Typewriter

In early 1993 I followed a course to learn 10-finger blind typing and passed it with flying colors. It was on a 1987 Olivetti ET Personal 55. Who said that tech companies were ever good in naming products? Solid machine though. I can still feel the tactile keys and the finicking about with the cartridges for the ink. Good memories.

Highlights

Great machine that started my career and forever destroyed any chance of a readable handwriting.

Education

Education

Journalism masterclass2010
NVJ Academy, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Activities
Masterclasses about the future of journalism by renowned journalists Nico & Jan Haasbroek.
Bachelor of Applied Arts, Journalism2000 - 2009
Windesheim, Zwolle, The Netherlands
Activities
  • Made a study trip to Moscow in '03 as part of a short-term exchange program with a Russian university.
  • Specialised in print journalism supplemented with optional modules in film and online journalism.
  • Held about 10 journalism & marketing jobs/internships before and during my study. I organized all of them by myself safe one: the Twentsche Courant Tubantia internship. This had to be arranged via the uni.
  • Since I had to pay the tuition fee out of my own pocket, I worked a few (services industry) jobs on top of those to help pay for my study (and the rest of the bills).
  • Before I started my journalism study, I wanted to get some work experience. By volunteering for a local radio station, I could learn the trade on the job. It was also an excellent opportunity to support local journalism and civil society in general.
  • Given the study, it was necessary to focus on gaining more relevant work experience and branching out into adjacent industries.
  • Building on my experiences during my Twentsche Courant Tubantia internship, I saw (rightly, it turned out) no real future for traditional 90s journalism or relying on uni resources to handle internships and my future career. I lost great opportunities because I wasn't allowed to go to the publication earlier.
  • So, I started looking at a crossover into marketing on my own. ilse.nl (now Sanoma) gave me this opportunity when they accepted me for a paid internship that combined marketing & journalism. It was content marketing before the term became popular in the 2010s. This would later result in them rehiring me for paid freelance projects.
  • My uni wasn't happy with my assertiveness, despite it being a must-have skill for a journo. They didn't want me to arrange any future internships by myself. According to them, I'd have to find something outside of the EU-wide Erasmus program if I would. #themstherules So I found a way and landed an internship (on a voluntary basis) in Kosovo for a Mitrovica-based NGO in '06/'07.
  • I branched into freelance tech journalism in '07 by writing hard- and software reviews for a Dutch magazine publisher.
  • Via Download.nl/Sanoma & a US-based indie publisher, I got into music journalism.
  • During '07, I was called in as an interim copyeditor, copywriter and webmaster to replace 3 part-time creatives during the big merger that formed Ziggo.
  • In '09, I managed to free up time to write my thesis and move on.
  • In 2010, I started my first (and last) in-house copywriting job as an employee for a Dutch multinational in B2B SaaS.
